ICSI in India
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is a form of IVF in which a single healthy sperm is injected directly into each egg. It is especially helpful when male-factor infertility makes natural fertilisation in the lab unlikely.
Typical hospital stay: No overnight stay (day-care procedures)
Time to plan in India: 3 to 4 weeks for a fresh cycle
Who needs it?
Very low sperm count or poor sperm movement
Abnormally shaped sperm
Sperm retrieved surgically
Previous IVF cycles with poor fertilisation
Use of frozen eggs
How it's done
Ovarian stimulation and egg collection, as in IVF
A semen sample is collected, or sperm is retrieved surgically if needed
An embryologist injects one sperm into each mature egg under a microscope
Embryos are grown for 3 to 5 days and the best are transferred
Recovery timeline
Same as IVF: rest on the day of egg collection, then light activity
Pregnancy test about 2 weeks after transfer
