Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy are minimally invasive procedures that let a gynaecologist look inside the uterus and pelvis to find and treat problems affecting fertility, such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions, blocked tubes or endometriosis.

Typical hospital stay: Day care or 1 night

Time to plan in India: 5 to 7 days

Who needs it?

  • Suspected polyps, fibroids or a uterine septum

  • Blocked fallopian tubes

  • Endometriosis or pelvic adhesions

  • Repeated IVF failure or recurrent miscarriage

How it's done

  1. Hysteroscopy: a thin camera passed through the cervix to view and treat the inside of the uterus, with no cuts

  2. Laparoscopy: a camera inserted through a small cut near the navel to examine and treat the pelvis

  3. Both are usually done under general anaesthesia, often together, in under 1 to 2 hours

Recovery timeline

  • Same day or next day: discharge

  • Week 1: light activity, mild shoulder or abdominal discomfort is common after laparoscopy

  • Week 2: back to normal routine for most women
